If you’re looking to engage your students in public speaking and debate, this creative classroom activity is just what you need! It’s an interactive and dynamic way to get students working together, practicing their speaking skills, and analyzing evidence—all while debating a fun topic like “Werewolves vs. Zombies.”
The experience begins with team formation. The class is divided into teams, ideally with four students each. If the numbers don’t align perfectly, teams of three can participate with slight modifications. Students are excited as they’re assigned to either defend werewolves or argue for zombies. The anticipation builds as they realize they’ll be pitting their arguments against another team.
With about ten minutes to prepare, the classroom buzzes with activity. Students dive into their debate templates, using the provided fact sheet to find evidence that best supports their side. This preparation time is crucial—it’s where they craft their arguments and strategize how to counter the opposing team’s points. The focus on using only in-class materials levels the playing field, emphasizing the importance of critical thinking and analysis.
As the debate begins, each student has a chance to present their argument and later, to deliver a rebuttal. The one-minute time limit keeps the debate lively and challenges students to be concise and persuasive. There’s no extra preparation time during the debate, so students must stay engaged and think on their feet.
The debate concludes with scoring based on the quality of arguments, rebuttals, and delivery. Without a declared winner, the emphasis is on learning and growth. This format helps reduce anxiety and makes public speaking fun, focusing on skill development rather than competition. It’s an engaging way to bring creativity into the classroom and watch your students thrive.
