If I know anything about kids, some of them LOVE arguing about sports. My activity, “Hoop Legends Showdown: LeBron vs. Jordan Debate Challenge,” is a fun, potentially explosive, blend of sports and debate to capture those students who may not initially be interested in the debate that hones their critical thinking and public speaking skills.

In this activity, students take on one of the most hotly debated topics in sports history: Who is the greater basketball player, LeBron James or Michael Jordan? As a Chicago native, I have an answer, but even I can see how the topic is debatable! This challenge is designed to encourage teamwork, research, and persuasive argumentation, all while tapping into the NBA’s enormous fandom.

The debate begins by dividing the class into evenly matched teams. Each team is assigned to argue in favor of either LeBron James or Michael Jordan. Using a fact sheet provided by the teacher, students prepare their arguments, encouraging students to base their case on solid evidence and logical reasoning. Limiting the scope of evidence students can use ensure that every student is on the same playing field (or court) when the debate begins.

During the debate, students present their arguments and rebuttals, thinking on their feet and responding to opposing viewpoints. Each student speaks twice, once to present their case and once to refute an opponent’s argument.

Incorporating elements of sports into debate topics can make the learning experience more relatable — I hope this activity is a slam dunk for your students!
