A battle of Biblical proportions! Leviathan and Behemoth are the ultimate biblical monsters– it’s time to settle which is the biggest chaos agent after all. This debate activity offers an opportunity that is more than just a classroom exercise—it’s an chance to explore their creativity, build confidence, and have a great time while learning.

To begin the debate, the class is divided into teams. Whether in a group of four or three, students will quickly realize that teamwork is essential, as they all must present their own unique argument defending the behemoth or leviathan as the ultimate agent of chaos. The “fact sheet” they will be provided is a crucial tool, no outside evidence is allowed. This not only allows for a class to have a no-prep debate, but it also facilitates specific rebuttals as all students have access to the exact same information, and only that information.

When the debate starts, students take turns presenting their arguments their prepared arguments. After they speak and listen to their assigned rebuttal “opponent,” they prepare and give their rebuttal later in the debate. The rebuttal is also a one-minute speech; the one-minute time limit keeps everyone on their toes, encouraging them to be clear and concise.

The debate is scored on the quality of the arguments, delivery, and rebuttals. With rubrics and templates, the topic may be chaotic, but the debate experience isn’t. Without the pressure of winning or losing, students are free to experiment with their ideas and learn from each other. I hope you check out this debate of biblical proportions today!
